Who We Are
Friendship Association of the blind (FAB) was founded in 1977 as anon-government charity, and one of Jordanian biggest and oldest Associations, and has become one of the world’s largest well known non-profit associations committed to blind issues.
FAB main Office is located in Amman (the Capital), and has two provincial branches. It is managed by 7 volunteer board members and chaired by Mr. Ahmad Allouzi (President of Asian Blind Union) and honorary chaired by Prince Raa’d Bin Zeid. (President of the Higher Council for the Affairs of PWDs)
FAB is considered as a nationwide, community-based, non-profit, non-religion association committed to services, research, public education and vision health for all visually impaired people in Jordan.
MISSION AND GOALS:
- FAB has the task of defending the rights and interests of visually impaired, with a view to their full social integration.
- In furtherance of its mission FAB main goals is including:
- a) Represent and defend the rights and interests of visually impaired people to any entities.
- b) Undertake and support activities that promote the physical, mental and moral development of the visually impaired, and their education, habilitation and rehabilitation, vocational training, employment, culture, sport and occupation of leisure time.
- c) Cooperate with all national, foreign and international that pursue similar objectives.
- d) Propose and advocate the adoption of effective measures to eliminate the disadvantages of visual impairment concept.
- The increased provision of services: The complexity and diversity of situations that now arise for people with visual impairments require specialized responses, integrated and localized.
- In the area of public relations activities that shall include, in different ways and with different approaches to put FAB in direct contact with various public sectors, therefore, this will help spreading the image of the association for the dissemination of activities and community awareness. Accordingly FAB will:
- a) Organize and support events.
- b) Prepare and monitor the implementation of protocols with several institutions, to improve and increase the supply of services / benefits of the blind.
- c) Monitor and respond to request for information that are placed (students, businesses, and families…etc
SOCIAL WORK
To continue the policy of support of all activities in the social field is a strong priority of the Association:
- Pursue the development of diverse applications for the support of the cultural activities.
- Continuing with the definition and implementation of national policy, comprehensive and integrated which besides responding effectively to the needs of people with visual impairments and their families, in its various aspects.
- Continue to promote the technical qualification of human resources, for greater coordination of services and professionalism.
- Structuring of new abilities / areas for action which are essential for increasing the autonomy and quality of life of people with blindness and their families.
TECHNICAL AID:
The Association will continue to develop the Program for Financial Support to the acquisition of technical aids and offer for the blind in rational way and when situation allows.
EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING:
The perspective of action for this sector based on 4 main strands:
- Preparation of people with visual impairments to work.
- Integration of people with visual impairments in regular vocational training structures, where conditions are met, both on the part of users and of training centers.
- Develop training courses for users who do not qualify for the integrated training.
- Extending the operations of the employment and training to other regions of the Kingdom.
- Training of new technology, Braille, mobility, communication, interpersonal and psychosocial skills.
- In a final stage students will have closer contact with the world of employment and helped to choose the path they intend to follow.
In parallel, we will continue to develop training for assets with a wide range of coverage, including persons who at the time, are unemployed and provide training to trainees who underwent training.
— For the continuation of all this work, the Association shall endeavor to:
- provide the human resources and materials provided in training, enabling the implementation of actions and achieving the objectives set.
- Pay particular attention to addressing the problem of equipment used (especially hardware), which are quite outdated.
- Working with training centers, for adaptation of people with visual impairments.
EDUCATION and CULTURE:
- The Association will continue providing free curriculum Braille books to the students in all their school levels. However, visually impaired Students have a scholarship and 90% university discount and the association offers the remaining 10% discount. However, Students will have 100% discount during their university study.
- The Association will make sure that all accessible instruments of education are available for the students in various fields.
- The Association will upgrade the Braille Library and make sure that all resources are within reach.
- Accordingly, the association will pay more attention to build a good relationship with various educational centers for the same purposes.
- FAB will build closer relations with the governmental and private sectors in making all of the codes more accessible for blind.
FUTURE PROJECTS:
– Friendship Association of the blind has the willing to widen its work. This will come through opening new branches in Aqaba (340 km south of the capital Amman) and Irbid (100 km north of the capital Amman). These branches will include kindergartens, and help covering all the needs and supports for the blind in north and south of Jordan.
– The Association is starting the E-Library founding and will continue developing its work to reach the intended results. This library will contains 16 advanced computers, Braille printers, audio system, Diasy, screen readers and modern braille displays.
MAIN ACTIVITIES:
- Many M&O Training workshops which help strengthen the instructors get more techniques on how to teach blind daily skills.
- Access to Technology seminars which help in finding more job opportunities.
- Advanced Computer Training Courses: These allow the blind to get more knowledge and surfing easily through the Internet.
- FAB was successfully forced the government to put on the floor a new law to secure the disabled persona and compel the private and public sectors to employ a number of blind in a suitable jobs according to their qualifications.
- As a result of FAB great activity in both national and international levels. Mr. Allouzi has been elected as president of Asian Blind Union in 2008 for four years. This will help FAB getting more experience, and to exchange more experiences.
